A história da Língua Inglesa

                            

          O inglês é um dos idiomas que mais possui verbetes. Isso porque muitos países usa o Inglês como língua oficial ou segundo idioma, depois por conta de sua história. Outro aspecto a ser analisado é que a fala e a escrita são bem diferentes, como o professor Rafael Lanzetti explica isso na série Mitos e Verdades no Aprendizado do Inglês:

"Por volta do séc. XV ocorreu, na Inglaterra, um fenômeno que conhecemos hoje por “The Great Vowel Shift”. Por razões que ainda estão sendo estudadas, as pronúncias das vogais se alteraram. O que era pronunciado [‘na.me] passou a ser pronunciado [neym]; o que era pronunciado [‘wi.fe] passou a ser pronunciado [wayf] e o que era pronunciado [how.ze] passou a ser pronunciado [haws]. Portanto, a pronúncia do inglês se desenvolveu, mudou, mas a ortografia continuou a mesma."

Treze frases com algumas expressões muito utilizadas no inglês das ruas. Confiram:
 

1. Who’s boss: Quem manda aqui. ( Quem é o chefe / manda chuva)
Ex: I’ll show them who’s boss. (Vou mostrar a eles quem manda.)

2. For old times’sake: para matar a saudade
Ex: We arranged to meet for old times´sake. (A gente ficou de se encontrar para matar a saudade.)

3. Everyone knows everyone else: Todo mundo conhece todo mundo
Ex: Everyone knows everyone else in my hometown. (Todo mundo conhece todo mundo na minha cidade natal.)

4. Get carried away: Empolgar-se
Ex: She got carried away and said things she didn´t mean. (Ela se empolgou e disse coisas da boca pra fora.)

5. Boss somebody around: Mandar em alguém
Ex: He bosses his girlfriend around. (Ele manda na namorada dele.)

6. Can’t help doing something: Não conseguir não fazer algo, deixar de fazer.
Ex: I can’t help missing you. (Não consigo não sentir saudades de você.)

7. Push somebody away: Afastar, fazer com que nos evitem.
Ex: She was pushing her friends away. (Ela estava afastando os amigos dela.)

8. And it shows: E dá pra notar, perceber.
Ex: “He’s really tired. And it shows.” (“Ele está muito cansado. E dá pra perceber.”)

9. Have no way of doing something: Não ter como fazer algo, não ter jeito.
Ex: I had no way of telling you about it. (Eu não tinha como te falar sobre isto.)

10. Close up: De perto
Ex: We saw her close up. (Vimos ela de perto.)

11. From a distance: De longe
Ex: I saw him from a distance. (Eu o vi de longe.)

12. Take part in something: Participar de algo
Ex: I’m not taking part in this competition. (Não estou participando desta competição.)

13. Knock somebody or something over: Derrubar alguém ou alguma coisa.

Por que "I" (eu) é sempre maiúsculo?

Por que "I" (eu)  é sempre maiúsculo?

E.g. "I study at Fisk".

Muitos alunos perguntam porque se escreve  "I" (eu) com letra maiúscula em inglês. Vamos lá: Em inglês antigo (Old English) "eu" era "ich", como é até hoje em alemão. A partir da invasão normandia de 1066, a língua inglesa entrou numa fase de profundas transformações, dando início ao que conhecemos como "Middle English". Durante esse período, que termina por volta do final do século XV, o "ich" original foi reduzido para "ic", e depois ainda mais para "i". Nos manuscritos, a primeira pessoa do singular passou a ser escrita com letra maiúscula para que fosse lida como uma palavra distinta, e não se misturasse com as demais. Com o advento da tipografia, um tipo de impressão que se utilizava de tipos móveis, também ficou evidente que, na composição tipográfica, um "i" minúsculo era muito fácil de se perder ou de se misturar com as palavras adjacentes. Maiúsculo, se tornava mais visível. A freqüência nos textos ditou a norma que se estende até os dias de hoje. Contudo, alguns autores, como o poeta E. E. Cummings, rebelaram-se contra a regra. Cummings costumava escrever "i" minúsculo nos seus sonetos, em vez do "I" usado pela maioria.
